UFO’s Over Princess Street
By George Green
At first glance, this rather striking image will be seen as UFO's gathering in a very familiar location and I hope it will stand on its own, having some resonance for the people of Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
However, in addition, I constructed this image to highlight something very fundamental about the way people think.
Here is what I hope my constructed image will highlight…
We all know that as we go about our daily lives, we often have to reach conclusions when either there isn't enough information available to us, or because we simply fail to access what is available.
Often, despite this, there is very little middle ground in our conclusions; it's either one extreme or the other.
In the constructed image the aliens are either friendly or unfriendly; the most imperative of all conclusions, ie. threat or no threat.
Now, although we are all programmed to do threat assessments, eg. when walking down a dark city street, or wherever we live, the same rapid thought processes apply in general.
Human thinking is driven by this immediate need to reach firm and definite conclusions, often with catastrophic consequences for the individual, group, nation-state etc.
Another complicating factor is that once we have reached a conclusion, it is extremely difficult to "step back" and reconsider.
The way we think originated in the distant past, its rapidity and need for a definite conclusion is deeply flawed, nevertheless, it continues, with life-affecting consequences for many.
It's so easy for us to get carried along a particular chain of thought, almost without self-awareness, and so it's worth making a conscious decision to pay actual attention to our sequences of thought.
