Mount Fuji

By Lindsay Carter

I was first introduced to Japan through the 1964 Olympics. My love affair with the country began in 1979-81. Both my ex-wife and step-daughter are Japanese, although I met them in London!

I was fascinated by the Japanese culture but found when I was there, there was a hostility to anybody not from Japan and I was often referred to as 'Gajin' meaning 'foreigner'.

Mount Fugi began to represent to me a frozen malevolence, able to erupt at any time.
