Cosy Comfort Blanket
by The Bingham Knitting Club
The Bingham Knitting Club was established in June 2022, following listening conversations with members of the local community, who, following 2 years (almost) in lockdown, felt the need to re-establish human connection in a safe, welcoming place where they could enjoy a cup of tea and a chat, while doing something creative.
The Bingham Knitting Club come together weekly and currently has 10 members, each of whom has lived experienced of mental health struggles.
The Knitting Club provides a safe haven where individuals come together with a shared objective, have a cuppa, and offer support to each other while enjoying their creative outlet. The Knitting Club members are generous with their knowledge and happily share their expertise with those who are less experienced.
The GATHER theme resonated strongly with group members who gather together each week to support and create. The GATHER theme features widely throughout the blanket by incorporating assorted symbols that mean something to the individual makers and which promote acceptance and inclusivity, for example, a woven harvesting basket, and a PRIDE rainbow. We invite visitors to admire and touch our blanket and to explore what other related symbols they can find within it.
The blanket itself represents cosiness and comfort; that feeling of being enveloped and held, of being given a warm hug at the end of a hard day.
