Fruit of the Womb, 2021
by Chandelle Waugh
Fruit of the Womb is a manifestation of my abortion, inspired by Norse goddess Frigga and the story of how she conceals children, who die in infancy, inside strawberries, together with the comparison of fruit to foetus size. This work draws the audience in with the delicate glass object surrounded by a steel, prison like, structure. Creating a thought-provoking environment allowing the audience to feel and subsequently opening conversation surrounding the shame placed upon women by society.
Text from sculpture:
I didn't deserve that what you did, what you made me do,
Well, you didn't make me do but what you tortured me into
And I chose you
It kills me every day, I weep and cannot sleep
When I think of what may have become, If I'd have been a mum
You see I'd wanted that my whole life, more than just being a wife,
To hold a child so close to my heart, that it would never want to be apart
But you manipulated my head and all I could do was lay on that bed
And bleed, for you
I watched my mother weep, for you
See you didn't deserve the delicate touch I held
You got mad at me and yelled
For creating such a beautiful soul
That I'd never get to hold.
